Santa Elena
(Saint Helena)

Santa Elena is the mother of the Emperor Constantine and the legendary finder of the true cross.  She appears exotically dressed to suggest that she is a Roman Empress - either crowned or wearing a turban.  Well known but not particularly popular in Mexico, Santa Elena was considered a mediator between the baptized newly born and God.  This retablo reads "Santa Elena De La Cruz. Emiz." and "Alberto Mejia Pinto, Apetatitla E. Tlaxcala, Acosto 7 De 1925" at the bottom.
