El Seņor de
Esquipulas
(The
Lord of Esquipulas)
This retablo represents The Lord of Esquipulas, also known
as the Black Christ. The image of the Black Christ is based on a
sculpture created in Guatemala in the sixteenth century. In 1594,
the Indians of the town of Esquipulas in southeastern Guatemela
commissioned Portuguese sculptor Quirio Cataņo to sculpt a crucified
Christ. Carved from balsam wood, it was polychromed a dark bronze color
which resembled the complexion of the indigenous people. Soon after
Cataņo had carved his image, the balsam wood blackened as a result of the
smoke from burning incense and pilgrims' candles. On the left stands
Mater Dolorosa and on the right is St. John the Evangelist.
