San
Jeronimo
Jerome is always seen in retablos as a hermit in a setting suggesting wilderness. Accompanying him are the symbols of penance and contemplation -the scourge, the skull, the crucifix. Also present is a book testifying to his scholarship. He was mistakenly called a cardinal and this false title is suggested by his red robe. His chest is bleeding to suggest his penitential beating with the scourge in his hand. His arm and leg wounds have become decorative. The lion is always mistakenly attributed to Saint Jerome instead of Saint Gerasimus who removed the thorn from its paw.
