San Francisco de Paula
(Saint Francis of Paola)

This retablo includes traditional elements such as the word "Caridad" ("Charity") surrounded by flames in the upper right corner as well as unusual elements such as the uncloaked head of the saint.  Saint Francis holds a staff in his right arm as is typical in retablo art, but he holds a crucifix in his left hand instead of the often depicted rosary.  Saint Francis is sought for protection against fires and by the blind and by the maimed.  In 1436, he founded the Hermits of Saint Francis which emphasized humility.
