San Ramon Nonato San Ramon is always portrayed as a cardinal. His attributes include a palm branch with three crowns signifying chastity, eloquence and martyrdom. He is always holding a monstrance - an allusion to his receiving communion from the hands of an angel while dying. Nonato means "not born" and commemorates his caesarean birth at the time of his mother's death. He is the patron saint of midwives and pregnant women. Because of his efforts at ransoming prisoners, he is also the patron saint of the falsely accused. Due to a padlock that was inserted in his lips, he is the patron saint of silence. Many retablos have the mouth completely rubbed away as this one does.
