RICHARD THOMPSON
Richard Thompson was sculpting a pair of
burros when they nuzzled up to each other and fell asleep.
The result was his endearing bronze sculpture entitled
"Siesta". Richard,
who has been sculpting wildlife for over thirty years, tries to always
sculpt using live animals and often sculpts these creatures in lifesize
proportions. Such is the case
with "Shell Game", a bronze work depicting a lifesize gray fox
pawing at a tortoise shell. South
Texas creatures are also a favorite subject for Richard - including
javelina, jack rabbits, and horned lizards.
Richard, born in Oklahoma, has called Texas
his home for most of his life. He
worked in the commercial art field after graduating from West Texas State
University. His work has been
featured in several publications, been included in one man shows at
Woolaroc Museum (Bartlesville OK) and the Panhandle Plains Historical
Museum (Canyon TX), and was awarded a Gold Medal by the Texas Cowboy
Artists Association. He says, "Every animal has its own personality
and vitality. My aim is to
get past the surface to the heart of the subject and hopefully touch the
heart of the viewer."
